THE FIRST SWEDISH–DANISH INITIATIVE
UNITING SCIENCE, STEWARDSHIP, AND OCEAN LITERACY
FOR SUSTAINABLE ÖRESUND/ØRESUND.
MARINE RESEARCH - EDUCATION & CONSERVATION
THREE MISSIONS
  • -1-
    MARINE RESEARCH
    'ÖRESUND PATROL' aims to be an action-driven organisation carrying out large-scale environmental and scientific projects in a citizen-science capacity and in collaboration with universities, organisations, and institutions.
  • -2-
    EDUCATION
    Our knowledge-building program emphasises the crucial role the ocean plays in sustaining life on our planet and the importance of ocean literacy. Understanding our impact on the ocean and the ocean's influence on us is essential for living and acting sustainably.
  • -3-
    CONSERVATION
    Our extensive and persistent advocacy for maritime policy change at the government level, both in Sweden and Denmark, will focus on advocating for the creation of a Marine Protection Area around Öresund/Øresund*.
    While Öresund/Øresund is designated already as a Marine Nature National Park, on a path to more sustainable future this recognition requires better implementation.
Öresund/Øresund
QUICK FACTS
• Öresund/Øresund is a narrow strait - only 4km at its narrowest point, uniting Sweden and Denmark.
• It is one of the World's busiest waterways.
• It is one of the World's busiest international ferry routes, with more than 70 departures connecting Sweden and Denmark daily.
• The most densely populated metropolitan area of the Nordic countries, approximately. 3.8 million people live along the shores of Öresund/Øresund.
• As late as the 1980s, Öresund/Øresund or Sundet was under immense pressure with increased nutrient concentrations,
increased algal growth, bottom oxygen deficiency, and in places high levels of toxic compounds in sediment and organisms.
• One of the largest mussel beds in Northern Europe can be found here, stretching over 75 square kilometres.
• Öresund/Øresund’s unique currents support Baltic Sea life and projects like Lynetteholmen pose a potential ecological threat.
• Öresund/Øresund is a critical habitat for the endangered harbour porpoise, one of the few areas in the Baltic region with year-round populations.
• After decades of absence, bluefin tuna have returned to Öresund/Øresund since 2016 — a sign of ecosystem recovery.
The strait is at the heart of Skåne–Copenhagen regional identity and a key reason the area attracts tourism, diving, and recreation.
A protected, thriving Öresund/Øresund brings long-term economic benefits through eco-tourism and environmental branding.

Yet, the general public’s interest in and access to information about the successes and ongoing challenges remain limited.
THE FIRST
SWEDISH–DANISH INITIATIVE UNITING SCIENCE, STEWARDSHIP, AND OCEAN LITERACY
FOR SUSTAINABLE ÖRESUND/ØRESUND.
99.9% of Earth’s population has never experienced an underwater
environment first-hand.

Underwater images and ocean communication programs are vital in helping the rest of the world see and understand the importance and delicate beauty of our oceans.
Operational Boundaries
Öresund/Øresund Patrol
Hallands Väderö in the north, a nature reserve since 1958 due to its valuable ecological life, featuring an old beech forest, unusual fungi, and large bird populations;
Skälderviken - a bay located between the Bjäre Peninsula to the north and the Kullen Peninsula to the south;
Gilleleje is a fishing town and seaside resort on the north coast of the peninsula of North Zealand;
Öresund/Øresund -the northern boundary between Øresund and Kattegat is a line which goes from Gilleleje to the westernmost point of Kullaberg (Kullen's Lighthouse) at the peninsula north of Helsingborg, known as Kullahalvön. In the south, the boundary towards the Baltic Sea starts at Stevns Klint, at the westernmost peak of the peninsula, just south of Køge Bay, and extends to Falsterbo on the Falsterbo peninsula. Its eastern boundary is the Swedish coastline; to the west, Amager may be considered part of Øresund.
Køge Bugt is approximately 500 square kilometres of shallow Danish bay in the southern part of Øresund.
ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE & GOVERNANCE
Our crew, advisory board and scientific network are 50/50 Swedish and Danish—by design.
We see the Öresund/Øresund not as a boundary but as a bond.
